A Shetland Textile Heritage Long View

CAROL CHRISTIANSEN gives a talk on the resurgence of design activity within the Shetland textile industry during the 1920s.

In response to what was perceived as a crisis in the industry around 1920, local officials and businesses began encouraging knitters to develop new designs. Additional motivation came from design competitions organised by yarn companies outside Shetland. As a result, there was a revival of creative activity in Shetland textiles, leading to the production of a number of distinctive and innovative pieces.

Members of the audience are also invited to bring their own vintage or heirloom textile pieces (from any period) to show and tell. If you are bringing an item, let us know by emailing us at enquiries@shetlandtextilesnetwork.org .

You do not have to bring an item to attend. You can just come along and enjoy the event.

All welcome, no booking required.
